Uncle Fred's "Good ol' boy" knife makin' kit
The steel in this kit is hardened but cuts easily with abrasives and carbide tools.
This kit starts with high-grade boron enriched steel* blank for you, the knife creator to craft onto your own unique design, two wooden blanks, and also pins to finish it with a custom handle of your preference.
Do I need to harden this steel?
No... Boron steel is made harder than conventional steel, allowing it to last longer and have more resilience.
Uncle Fred recommends keeping the steel cool while cutting and grinding.
The main benefit of adding boron to steel is hardenability, where minute amounts significantly improve hardness. ... These properties mean that the boron-containing carbon steels are used where the base steel meets most properties, such as wear resistance, but the hardenability is too low.
Soluble boron arranges in steels along grain boundaries. This retards the γ-α transformations (austenite to ferrite transformation) by diffusion and therefore increases the hardenability. Boron steel can have a yield point of about 1,350–1,400 N/mm2 (196,000–203,000 psi). That's about four times stronger than average high-strength steel. |
